There are a plethora of excellent resources available to snorkelers. They range from books, cds, dvds, and websites. Here are a few of the most informative marine-oriented websites:
Weathernet http://cirrus.sprl.umich.edu/wxnet/ (Site related to weather around the world) Ocean/coral reef sites: http://www.aims.gov.au/pages/research/coral-bleaching/scr2004/ http://www.enchantedlearning.com/biomes/coralreef/coralreef.shtml http://www.coralreefalliance.org/ http://www.reefbase.org/ http://www.wcmc.org.uk/marine/data/coral_mangrove/ http://www.reefnet.org/ http://slugsite.tierranet.com/ http://www.seaslugforum.net/welcome.cfm http://www.fishbase.org/home.htm http://www.reefbase.org/ http://www.crustacea.net/ http://seawifs.gsfc.nasa.gov/OCEAN_PLANET/HTML/ocean_planet_resource_room.html http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/fish/Organizations/aes/aes.htm http://www.ocean.com/default_0404.asp http://www.ocean.com/Gallery/Photographers/?PID=46 (Ethan’s gallery) Books BSAC. Snorkeling For All. Stanley Paul & Co. Ltd. 1991. This is a straightforward and textbook-like manual about snorkeling, equipment, training and technique - written by the British Sub-Aqua Club, member of the World Underwater Federation.Maas, Terry and Sipperly, David. Freedive! BlueWater Freedivers, 1998. A Complete Guide to Breath-Hold Diving. This book, as the title describes, is primarily for free-divers, not snorkelers. However, we appreciate this book for it's comprehensive text on beginning and advanced freediving, including chapters on physiology, safety concerns, and philosophy. Also see "Videos". Newman, John. Scuba Diving & Snorkeling for Dummies. IDG Books Worldwide, Inc. 1999. Besides a lot of information that's only applicable to divers, this book is a great introduction to snorkeling. It covers equipment, technique, and physiology. It also has a section on marine plants and animals, different underwater environments, destinations etc. |
